| | Elvis Costello - Veronica | ] | So I'm in a bit of a creative time in my life right now. i guess i go through these spurts - and by creative i mean of course, musically. I haven't started this many songs at the same time in awhile. I've also gone back and created worthy-demos to songs that i haven't really paid that much attention to. songs that have been around the stever-brain for years just now really getting light shone on them. I think it has something to do with being inspired by great songwriters that i'm just starting to get into like Sting and the Police and Elvis Costello. Here are a few of the new songs i'm a-working on:
Friends and Enemies Grey (You Know) Outer Space Never Really Noticed (working title for now) There You, You Go We Are All Robots Give It A Shot (just started!)
and about 3 or 4 others that don't have any lyrics or real names to them yet. go me!
don't you hate it when you burn the top of your mouth on pizza? |

He does those really cool and funky characterizations usually found in the reviews sections. His illustrations are for the "Rolling Stone Hall of Fame" albums. Here are some cool ones he did of the Beatles (he took alot of liberties with Ringo, but John, Paul and George are spot-on.)

I brought my camera but didnt take any (although Eddie took one of Toine hitting on Emily that NEEDS to be developed) so these pictures are stolen from friends. Place your mouse over the pictures to get info on 'em.

So for the past 2 months i've been running a mile or 2 just about every other day. i've also been doing 60 pushups and 80 situps each night for about a month too (i just bumped that up to 70 p-ups and 120 s-ups yesterday.) I also decided to not do fastfood of any kind (excep Subway where i get a turkey and provalone on wheat) for a month. Why? cuz i was starting to get lazy and even worse: started gathering a gut. I can safely say that i've lost about 75% of the gut from this regimen, but today i caved on the fast food. i was just in such a mood for chicken mcnuggets (my heroin) that i went and got a large #9 meal. I don't exactly remember the day i started the 'no fast-food month' but i know it was between the 5th and 9th of October, so i got pretty close! I'm going to force myself to not eat fast food more than once a week (and i'll try to do longer than that) while continuing my running and exercises. Next time you see me my muscles are going to be busting out.

I decided to visit my old "haunting ground" of Harrisonburg, VA for halloween. It felt weird to be back... actually not a good feeling. But it was real cool to see and hang out with friends i haven't seen in awhile. Nate is Nate, Brittany is Brittany, and Liesel has lost weight and has a nose-ring. Toine and i drove down for the night. We arrived and went to Ruby Tuesdays, because no one was at their respective homes. Nate was working but he wasn't our waiter, although he did stop by and talked to us every now and then. He got some girl to come up and tell me she wants me, and he told toine that our waitress (who toine wanted probably because she met his requirements: female and within 10 feet of him) was pregnant. We met liesel when she got offa work and went back to her place (where she now lives with nater.) She definitely looked different! she dressed up into her costume which was a redskins fan, Toiners dressed up as an escaped convict (he actually BOUGHT an orange costume and handcuffs) and i was a nerd (lots of dressing up and hours of makeup...) We went off in search of festivities! Brittany's sunchase apartment beckoned. She was dressed as "a little kid" and her roommates and friends were: 2 moms, a girl from The Incredibles, and a redneck. Emily Jerome and Eddie Coin showed up and they were "white trash" and "emo" respectively. We all went to a party in Fox Hills, and stayed for maybe 5 minutes, it sucked. We trekked up to another party where we met up with nate (NOT dressed up!) and Stephanie (Brittany's roomie and one of the "moms") had beer poured on her, so we left (thus losing nate and liesel.) Toine, Emily, Eddie and I went to a party Eddie knew of, which wasn't all that great, but there were some funny moments as Toine tried his hardest to hit on Emily (Eddie and I dubbed him "knight in shining armor")!!!! After a long night out, i came back and stayed up watching horrible horror movies with Brittany's friends, and didn't crash until about 7 am on the floor. I was one tired nerd... |

I've finished watching all the seasons that are currently on DVD of Smallville. What can I say, i'm both proud and ashamed i made it all the way. The third season was more interesting than #2, while #4 started out even better, but then sunk quickly. Looking back on 4 seasons worth of a 45-minute show, i can honestly say i'll probably never (want to) see these again. Kinda like the time i downloaded the first two NES versions of the Metal Gear games, and then finished them. It was nice at the time, but i ain't never going back. I've found myself in a bit of a creative streak. i'm currently working on more new songs than i have in FOREVER! |

| | The Click Five - Time Machine | ] | Last night i had dinner with Tim and Allison. It's been awhile since i saw either one of them, and even longer since all three of us were together. Allison picked TGIFridays in the new section of Tyson's Mall. I've decided to go a month without fast food, and chicken nuggets/tenders of most kinds are on that list. so instead of getting the normal "stever-usual" of chicken tenders, i got the chicken ceaser salad. it was actually really good, and only had about 4 peices of chicken - surprisingly it was the salad that was the best part! WHO KNEW?!?!?!?!?!? anyways, the three of us had a good time (and me and tim 2 beers) and talked about what is going on with us but as usual alot of our past came up - we did goto high school together. it was fun, and i hope to do it again soon. after dinner we walked around the mall and checked out a bookstore. It had 2 levels, and we spent most of our time on the first floor where the music was. I saw some guy i recognized from JMU but i don't think he recognized me. Allison danced in the cd section to "Jesse's Girl"... We left and i followed Tim over to his parents house in fairfax. i haven't been there in YEARS and it was interesting seeing the place and his parents after so long. They were equally surprised. weird.
i've stumbled upon a pop-rock fivesome that's pretty cool. they're called the Click Five, and they only have one album out so far. Paul Stanley co-wrote one song with them, two songs are written by guys from "Fountains of Wayne," and on a few shows they opened up for the Backstreet Boys. They're pretty cool. All play instruments and they dress alike in suits similar to early-Beatles. But the awesomest part is lead-singer Eric Dill. His voice can reach real high notes full-voiced. We're talking in Robert Plant-range! I recommend the song "Good Day." Let's see what happens with these guys. |

Toine has let me borrow his Smallville dvd sets. I went thru the first season in about a week, and i'm already on the last disc of the second season. It's an interesting show. If it were not for the whole 'Superman as a kid' plot, i doubt i'd even sit thru an episode. But because of it, i give it a shot. It's a mixed bag: some stuff is directly stupid like the emotional content that always gets thrown in (it was done great in Full House: it was something else to laugh at), and the 'hip' music thrown in. Oh, awesome, this scene begins with a song from The Calling!!! And oh man that theme song sucks. But there is some cool stuff too. It's nice to notice little things thrown in from the comics, like Lex almost always wearing a purple shirt, and Clark wearing almost exclusively only blue and red. Also, i'm not sure where i stand on the story. Lex and Clark are friends... it's questionable but interesting at the same time. The same with how every student and teacher at Smallville High seems to either get super powers, die, or both. The best part so far was when Christopher Reeve (THE Superman from the movies) guest starred. He did an excellent job (mind you, he was wheelchair and oxygen-tank bound) and music from the movies was used during his scene (the only emotional content i've felt worked so far.) I'm sure i'll borrow seasons 3 and 4 from Toine, and maybe catch up on season 5 - happening now. We'll see...
On the vocational front, Dad's lined me up with 2 IT job fairs. The first one for IBM seems like it'll only be a trial-run, considering they're looking for people with 'professional experience,' but the second one is aimed more at recent college grads and involves something called speed-interviews, which is remeniscent of speed-dating. Wish me luck.

Last update i mentioned 2 new "best of" cd's that are coming out in the next month or so. The first is Nirvana - Sliver: the Best of the Box. It's a best of of With the Lights Out, Nirvana's amazing 3 CD/1 DVD box set of late 2004. What's interesting is the tracklisting and the cover have finally come out. The cd will contain 3 "new" songs, previously unreleased, and amazingly, unheard in the nirvana community.
1. Spank Thru (1985 Fecal Matter demo) 2. Heartbreaker (First Nirvana show, 1987) 3. Mrs. Butterworth (1988 band demo) 4. Floyd The Barber (Live 1988) 5. Clean Up Before She Comes (1988 home demo) 6. About A Girl (1988 home demo) 7. Blandest (1988 studio session) 8. Ain't It A Shame (1989 studio session) 9. Sappy (1990 studio session) 10. Lithium (1990 KAOS radio show) 11. Opinion (1990 KAOS radio show) 12. Sliver (1990 home demo) 13. Smells Like Teen Spirit (1991 boombox demo) 14. Come As You Are (1991 boombox demo) 15. Old Age (1991 studio session for "Nevermind") 16. Oh The Guilt (1992 studio session) 17. Rape Me (1992 solo acoustic home demo) 18. Rape Me (1992 studio session) 19. Heart-Shaped Box (1993 studio demos) 20. Do Re Mi (1994 boombox demo solo acoustic) 21. You Know You're Right (1994 boombox demo solo acoustic) 22. All Apologies (1994 boombox demo solo acoustic)
Track #1 - Spank Thru is the song that started it all. Seriously. This is from the famous Kurt Cobain demotape called "Fecal Matter." He gave a copy to Krist Novoselic, and this is the song that perked his interest in starting a band with Kurt. That band? Nirvana. I was wondering why no Fecal Matter material appeared on the Box Set, especially since Fecal Matter artwork was included. Now i see why... it was a tease and taste of this best-of cd. Well it worked. Interestingly enough, about a day or two before the tracklisting was released, i was thinking "wouldn't it be awesome if Spank Thru from Fecal Matter made it onto the Best-of?" And then I almost KNEW it was going to make it... and then it did. YAY
Track #9 - Sappy was pretty much guaranteed to be on this box, considering it's a highly-liked song in the Nirvana community (it's my favorite Nirvana song.) What's cool, is it's a "new" version, and not the well-known version that appeared on the original box-set. What makes it even more awesome, is it's the early version from a studio session that no one has heard, outside of the band and the producer. Exciting!
Track #14 - Come As You Are is from the same boombox tape that Butch Vig heard and went on to use as a blueprint for Nevermind. It also contained Smells Like Teen Spirit (released on the original Box Set and this Best-of) and Old Age (a minute-long version is circulating the internet) as well as other demos that haven't been heard. A weird choice for this CD, but interesting.
The Tracklisting looks alright with the big exception of the live version of Floyd the Barber. I have no clue why it was put onto the original box set (no other live versions of songs were released that were not previously unreleased/unheard songs) and i seriously doubt most would rate it as one of the top 25 songs from the box-set.
The other cd that i talked about, *NSYNC's Greatest Hits, also just recently released it's cover art. |

Last night, Stan had a few people gathered to goto a National's baseball game. The group consisted of Toine, Brandon, Richard, Me, and three of stan's former TJ classmates Janelle, Cassie & David Hechtman (see pic #1). It was real cheap ($5) but the game itself was real boring. Of course, i'm pretty biased, considering i already think baseball is a boring game to begin with. Highlights of the evening were toine falling asleep on the metro, richard's "turbulance" into toine's lap, and the golden moment: Toine hitting on a girl (see pic #2.)
A new Nirvana cd is coming out. When i say new, i of course mean not new, but kinda. It's going to be called "Sliver - The Best of the Box" and it's going to contain around 20 songs culled from "With the Lights Out" the tremendous Nirvana Box Set that came out last year. The cool parts about this new single disc is 1) Frances Bean Cobain (Kurt's daughter) is picking the cover and 2) there are going to be 3 previously unreleased songs on here. The Nirvana Community (read: me) is going crazy trying to figure out what the 3 "new" songs are going to be. The possibilities are 1) unreleased stuff we've heard before on bootlegs, only this time in better quality (which most of the original box set was) 2) completly unheard or unknown stuff (which only 1 song from the box set was for me) or 3) a mixture of the two. I'm guessing it's going to be either the first or third of my predictions. Til November 1st i'm buzzing! Continuing this thread, NSYNC is coming out with a best-of a week or two before the new Nirvana one. Unfortunately it will have NO new songs and NO publicity from the band. Sounds like Jive Records is trying to cash in...
Update on the bass: I cut a vinyl tile found at Home Depot into the shape of a new pickguard and put it on!!! Exciting, i know.

Just this once, i'll allow you all to jump for joy, dance, even cry with overcome emotion. Yes, GITRMEN, or to be more precise, Ex-GITRMEN, has come back to the family. Well, it was always in the family, but it's come back to the person in the family who hasn't had a car for a year. A YEAR, folks. The Beatles put out 4 singles and 2 albums in that amount of time back in 1964! For the past year, stan had the car, which i suppose made sense. I still had school to finish up, he had a real job, and a few years before when i took a year off, i had the car all to myself. But stan decided enough is enough and bought a new car - a "champagne" 2001 Mitsubishi Galant. A nice step up, but please, how can one compare with GITRMEN? this is the car that laughs at the word 'pickup,' trembles at the thought of a hill, remained at the same "work"-shop for 6 months, went thru at least 3 different engines, blew smoke thru it's steering wheel, etc., etc., etc. This one is going down in history with the likes of the Batmobile and the General Lee. And now that it's back in my sole position, i promise... nay, i VOW to get lost in it on my way to places nearby as much as possible! |

Yesterday was a big event in my family. My cousin Carlton (son of my father's sister, Besty) married his long-term girlfriend. This is only my second wedding i've ever been to - i went to my friend and JMU roomie Jim Lunsford's wedding to his longtime girlfriend Julie Tewel in December 2004. Carlton's was pretty weird, but in a nice way. I haven't really seen him and his brothers in awhile and they all look like grown-up versions of the perpetually 8,10 and 13 year olds i remember them as (or something like that.) I got to see my dad's side of the family (minus cousins Jason and Melissa back in Arizona) all together so that was nice. I'd never met Laura, Carlton's bride, before, but she seemed pretty cool. She went to JMU, so she can't be all that bad! in fact, apparently she ran into stan on a bus once, and recognized the similarity between his face and Nelson (Carlton's brother.) Pretty freaky! Anyways I of course hope them the best, considering there are some other events going on in their immediate family which isn't all that fun. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Dove! |

As soon as the SecretAgents ended in Harrisonburg, and I moved back down here to Woodbridge, I knew i wanted to put together a band or do something musical with other people. That's pretty much what i always want to do. So i put an ad up on Craig's List and got a few responses. 3 were from people older than me, like near if not in their 30s, 2 guys and a girl. My fourth response was from a girl who was my age and funnily enough lives very close to Stan. I decided to meet up with her, and was wondering what stuff of mine to bring over to her for her to listen to. My most recent demos were the collection i did last year called September Rocktober. Although nicely recorded, the drums and vocals were pretty sad considering i was neither sober nor completley comfortable performing, alone, my own material. I also changed keys of the songs to facilitate me hitting the notes, which completely changes the feel of the songs - for the worse, i'm afraid. Anyways, i wanted to have better quality versions of my songs for others to get a better understanding of my stuff, plus i had some new songs i was just starting. So i started making new demos! I only made 3 before i met up with Kelsey (the name of the singer) so i made a CD with them and just threw on my September Rocktober stuff to complete it. It didn't work out between us (although apparently she just joined a rock band with alot of Zeppelin and Stones influence - cool!) but that's alright because i'm going to meet up with two guitarists/singers soon. In the meantime i finished up all the new demos i wanted to make. Some of the singing on it is sped up (allowing me to hit notes i can't) so they have a little chipmunk-feel to them. It doesn't get in the way too much, and i'm pretty proud of them. I weeded out the old songs i'm not that into, boiling them down to just "rock" songs, and put 3 of my new ones in also. They're now available if anyone is interested in hearing them. Just ask me, or you can use the 'Get File' feature on AIM from my screenname, thanost81. |

| | The Click Five - Good Day | ] | For the past week I've been tracking down old Midi (old computer-music program), MP3, and Wav files on my computer, and marking down when i wrote them. I'm starting a "Steve's Songwriting Journey" document that chronologically traces all my songs (well, only the REAL stuff. Obviously there are millions of riffs and ideas I'm not counting.) I've traced it back to my VERY FIRST song I ever sat down to write. Here's a section of that document:
1995 1. Defeat Me A song written before learning a musical instrument (I, of course, had been playing percussion and drums for a few years. A little piano lessons a few years before this, that I didn’t remember did not help.) I wrote this song using MIDI, perhaps my first midi, perhaps after trying a few versions of songs by other artists (Nirvana.) It was a song written for a fictional band with Ryan Schneider (guitar, vocals) and me (drums.) all I remember about it was 1) we never played it live, 2) it had an extremely hard guitar part near the end, with continuous eight-or-sixteenth note runs that I put in cuz I thought they sounded cool, 3) the lyrics were about a burglar who gets caught. The only lyrics I remember was the chorus that went “puzzled, mastered, but you won’t defeat me.” Defeat Me was the name of the song and our band: I randomly chose it (opened the book, randomly pointed) from a book on the Holocaust we were reading in 8th grade. The song does not remain, and the only real part I remember is the ‘melody’ of the chorus lyrics.
Ha! Pretty embarassing - a song about a BURGLAR!?!? I think i was trying to be hip and cool by being "dark." I've spent hours on this document and so far, in a ten year span(1995 - 2005) I figured I've written 74 real song ideas. Not an amazing amount, but not too bad either. The best part is i can see and tracce a progression from year to year. cool |

| | Solid Harmonie - to Love One Again | ] | On Friday night mom went to my grandparents for the weekend, so i had the place to myself (and mila, too) so imagine my surprise when not a minute after i wake up on Saturday, my door opens and someone else is there! luckily it was only stan, who has a key to the place. he was going over to dad's to check out new cars, and then we were going to have a "family dinner." the car part was interesting. stan is getting a new car, which will mean i inherit the ex-GITRMEN. it's not the greatest of cars, but it's great on gas-mileage, and i haven't had a car in just about a year. stan saw 2 camry's, funnily enough, the same car as the ex-GITRMEN, and then we had to rush back to goto Red Robin. Red Robin was good, i got a wrap (not chicken tenders!) and the highlight of the evening was the encredibly awkward silence from and between Shannon and her "boyfriend" John. I use the term "boyfriend" in quotations, because if he doesn't become ex-boyfriend status in a week, i'd be surprised. Saturday night i got an Im from richard saying he was having a graduation-party, and wondering if i could go. of course this was last minute, of course i didnt' have a car, and of course this actually wasn't a graduation party - it was a series of parties we were going to invite ourselves to. i said i'd go if he picked me up, which he did. it took him an hour to get here (killiam factor?) and then we were off. now i wasn't driving, and i had detailed instructions that i'd written down thanks to Mapquest.com, but somehow we found ourselves entering DC. We didn't want to be entering DC. luckily, since richard was driving, we made an illegal U-turn and headed back to the first party. it was at a place called Dr. Dremos, and is like a huge JMU party. there are about 10 beer pong tables. Stan, Brandon and some of stan's friends were there already, and in stan's case, already drunk. we had a good time there, and then made our way over to a house party nearby. it was also fun, but didn't remind me at all of JMU. everyone seemed to be on the same social level, which was great. alot later we left the party and went back to stan's apartment to crash. richard took the whole pull-out bed leaving me with the other, smaller couch (i only got 3 hours of sleep.) i got some necessary 7-11 food and watched an episode of Quantum Leap before quitting the night. the next morning dad came by to take stan out car-hunting again. i wasn't in the mood so richard and i trekked to the metro stop to get back to his car, still parked at dremos. it took us forever to get home, so i bought us some taco bell for his troubles and we watched an MST3K movie - good stuff. |

I guess he was putting the moves on me. These past few days are blending in with each other - not much is happening. I've been obsessively working on, and am almost finished with, collecting old movies stan and i made a decade ago, and transferring them to DVD. today i had lunch with shannon and dad, and besides an "interesting" event, it was nice. the "interesting" event? the guy next to us was offended by something that was said, and basically told us off. i just came across a cool website that is selling the COMPLETE series of tv shows that are not on the market. obviously they were recorded from tv channels, and collected that way, but still really cool. here are some that caught my eye!
I used to watch this show alot when i was real young. i especially remember watching it in the afternoons at my granparents place. i don't remember very much about the individual episodes, but recently i've seen about 3 episodes and stan owns the movie. the movie is real silly, and doesnt hold up that much, but the 3 episodes i saw in the past 5 years were awesome. they had the silliness of the movie, but in such a small package of 30 minutes, it's easier to take. but the best thing about them is that they were hour episodes, with a cliffhanger in the middle. that cliffhanger always ends with something like "is this batman's last breath!? will he escape? find out next time: same bat time same bat channel!" i'd love to get my hands on these shows - my number one "to-get" series.
Duck Tales was a show that was on in the afternoons, but i got into it late. i only started watching it when chip and dale's rescue rangers came on after it. then alot of disney shows followed it, including Tale Spin, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, and Bonkers. By the time Bonkers came on, i was barely watching anymore. And when i was watching Duck Tales was usually on too early, and i was still on my way home from school, so i missed much of it. but of all the shows it is pretty much 'the classic,' and i'd really like to check it out again. on the list!
Darkwing Duck was the fourth disney tv cartoon on in the afternoon, and the one i watched the most (well, besides Chip and Dale, but only because that was on longer.) I remember this one being an event, they had a countdown to it with little clips, and i remember thinking how awesome it was to have a disney cartoon (quality) who was a superhero (my obsession.) each day, darkwing would strut on and it'd say "7 days until Darkwing Duck!" I remember after the success of this, they did a Goof Troop and Bonkers countdown, but those shows blew. on the list!
My #2 "to-get" series. Don't ask me why, i can't explain it, but i was REALLY into this show. I had the toys and made up words to MC Hammer's "Too Legit" using these character's, that i still remember. It only lasted 21 episodes, and apparently didn't even have a real ending. Another weird thing is, i don't remember watching many of those episodes, even though i was really into it. i think it was on Saturday mornings, and i hated getting up.
Tonight i went over to Allison's parent's place. she doesnt live there, and was just hanging out to keep away from her roommates tonight... trouble, i guess. we just watched tv (man, her parents have horrible stations) and played stratego - i killed! |
